Data Center Power Coalition Launches to Standardize AI Infrastructure Power

Securing reliable grid power for AI data centers has become as difficult as building the facilities themselves. In many markets, interconnection timelines stretch for years, pushing operators toward on-site generation, battery storage, and microgrids. The problem is that each operator tends to assemble these solutions independently, producing a fragmented mix of bespoke projects that are hard to replicate at scale.

The Sijbrandij Foundation, a philanthropic non-profit, is trying to change that. This week it launched the Data Center Power Coalition, a group of 12 founding partners spanning on-site power, load flexibility, and grid interconnection. The coalition is built around the Foundation’s Data Center Power Playbook, an open-source framework describing a four-phase approach to powering AI compute facilities.

What the Playbook Covers

The four phases outlined in the playbook move operators through:

  • Power-first site selection
  • Initial on-site generation
  • Modular clean-energy buildouts
  • Accelerated grid interconnection supported by embedded load flexibility

The central idea is power co-development: planning energy infrastructure alongside compute from the very beginning rather than treating power as an afterthought. Solar-and-storage campuses built adjacent to compute facilities create the load flexibility that can, in turn, speed up grid interconnection approvals and reduce energy costs for local ratepayers.

How the Coalition Is Structured

The 12 founding partners include Amperesand, DG Matrix, Emerald AI, Florrent, GridCare, Hammerhead, Hanwha, Hitachi, NeuralWatt, Planted Solar, Skeleton Technologies, and Voltus. Rather than requiring all partners to collaborate on every project, the coalition maps each partner to a specific subcategory of the playbook. Where two partners cover the same subcategory, that is intentional: the Foundation did not want to sole-source any capability.

Aric Li, who leads the Foundation’s Data Center Energy Initiative, described the Foundation’s role as a neutral coordinator helping demand-side teams assemble the right combination of partners for a given project. The goal, he said, is a coordinated network accessible in one place rather than a fragmented procurement process involving a dozen separate vendor relationships.

Relevance for Hosting and Colocation Operators

While hyperscalers have the resources to navigate complex power procurement on their own, the coalition is designed to serve operators of all sizes. Smaller providers and those in regions with less developed grid infrastructure stand to benefit most from a replicable playbook that packages the expertise normally spread across multiple specialized vendors.

For web hosting professionals and colocation buyers, the practical takeaway is that power constraints are now shaping where and how fast new capacity comes online. Initiatives like this one, if they gain traction, could shorten the gap between when a data center is designed and when it actually receives sufficient power to operate at AI-scale workloads.
